About Hindmarsh Island

Take 12 photos on the 12th of the month showing your day. This is my day on 12th November 2012.

It is a Monday and the day started out grey and cloudy but soon turned into a lovely spring day with temperatures around 17C. I was at home all day.

PhotoHunt theme for the week beginning 10th November 2012 is ‘Kite’

Kites come in all sizes and shapes. Some are big enough to pull and hold a person. There are even birds in Australia called Kites (though I don’t have a pic of one but they are common in my area)

Kite Surfing
Regularly in my area there are kite surfers.

Kite Surfing
They do fast turns and spins

Kite Surfing
And even leave the ground (or water in this case)

Wingman

Then there are the ones who take kite flying to the extreme and strap a motor onto their back

Overhead
Not a piece of string holding this kite up. Look at the wires!

Landing
And landing succesfully

PhotoHunt theme for the week beginning 3rd November 2012 is ‘Seasonal’

One of the seasonal activities in my area is cockling.

1st November is the beginning of the ‘cockle’ season in South Australia. Cockles are a bivalve mollusks of the family Cardiidae, having rounded or heart-shaped shells with radiating ribs – similar to clams or pippins. Cockling is a seasonal activity because none are allowed to be harvested during their breeding season.

Sunrise

Sunrise with a cockle boat and cocklers going out to the ocean beach.

Going cockling
The cockle (similar to pipi’s) season has opened and these two were going out to the ocean beach to do some cockling. The cockles are used mainly for bait but you can buy them to eat, usually from the local fishermen.

Transport
Truck being moved by barge and boat on Mundoo Channel, Hindmarsh Island.
The truck is used during the ‘cockle’ season on the Coorong beach and at the end of the season is bought back for maintenance. The cockle season ends on 31st May.
